Short Story on Kismet
One fine day the gods Shiva and Parvati were drifting on a cloud when they noted a beggar making his way on a lonely road on outskirts of a city. He seemed quite happy with the world in general having secured a full meal recently. Not sure of his destination and in need of a place to lie down for a nap he was considering his surroundings for a suitable spot.
Parvati implored Shiva to help the poor man. "Look at his tattered clothes, his dirty face, his unkempt hair Shiva. Surely you can find some kindness in your heart." Shiva looked upon his beloved and dutifully responded, " I cannot help him try as I might ! Its his kismet." Unaccepting of this explanation Parvati demanded proof.
Noting tears bubbling in Parvati's beautiful eyes Shiva said," Well - observe that the happy beggar is approaching a junction in the road. Once he reaches this point, he must either turn left or right. I will place a pot of gold at that point of intersection. In theory he gets the gold and can settle down comfortably wherever he wishes with the new found riches. Is that an acceptable plan?" Breaking into a big smile Parvati agreed.
The beggar, now less than a hundred feet from the intersection devised a plan to keep himself amused. Closing his eyes he said to himself ,"Let me see if I can make the turn to the left without the aid of visual cues!"
And so it came to pass that he safely turned left at the right time and left the pot of gold behind !
